Sleepless night

Night falls
And I am free
And I am trapped
Between one blink
and the next
I am lost
In the tangles
Of my wild hair
Running barefoot
Between its trunks of gold
The sun flickers as I inhale
Crystal clarity
The moss between my toes
I pet a deer
And revel in the silence
And I am free
Falling
(No noise precedes the sudden drop)
Into a ravine with no roots
To the cold tiled floor
Amid a heap of former golden trees
Cut down
And into shape

I lift my eyes to the mirror:
The pony in there
Is silent.
